Major General Shavendra Silva felicitated
Together we have won the war. We have to now develop the country together. Organisations like Sri Lanka Insurance could be the key contributors in such development efforts, said Major General Shavendra Silva.
The Major General was speaking at a function where he was felicitated recently for eradicating terrorism from Sri Lankan soil, at the Sri Lanka Insurance Life Congress 2009 in Bentota Taj Exotica Hotel.
Major General Shavendra Silva was the keynote speaker at the event which comprised Life Insurance Advisors.
He shared with many, his ground experiences of tactics, innovations, commitment and unity among a victorious team.

LTTE woman suicide bomber targeted Brigadier Shavendra Silva, Commander of Sri Lanka Army’s 58 Division
It has now become very clear that the LTTE woman suicide bomber targeted Brigadier Shavendra Silva, the Commander of Sri Lanka Army’s 58 Division, but he miraculously escaped.
Brigadier Shavendra Silva subsequently vowed that he will continue with the humanitarian operation and liberate the innocent Tamil civilians languishing as hostages of the LTTE. He added that he would continue with his operation until the last innocent Tamil civilian is released from the grip of the Tiger terrorists.
Sri Lankan Army sources in Visuvamadu told Asian Tribune that at the time the LTTE’s woman suicide bomber blew herself up, only 896 civilians managed to arrive to the Government side.
Subsequently, he said "after the incident, Sri Lanka’s Army’s 58 Division has taken 5800 IDPs and on Monday, a total of 6696 civilians from the war zone arrived into the Government controlled area.
Those civilians arrived into the Government controlled area told of their tale of woes and said several thousands are still waiting to enter into the Government controlled area, despite LTTE cadres’ threat and intimidations.
Army sources said that 28 people were killed in the morning incident on Monday and out of them 18 were Army personnel. Also out of those killed there were 8 females – three of them woman Sri Lankan soldiers and a few children. He added nearly 60 people were injured and out of them 24 were soldiers. All those sustained injuries were evacuated and the serious causalities were airlifted to Vavuniya, Anuradhapura and those who are not serious were sent by road.
Army sources told Asian Tribune, "when civilians come to the entry point, we don’t check women and children immediately, but men with good built and physique are kept behind, because men can sit for a while, as women and children cannot sit that long.
He said, we do this out of our respect for women and children. He added, "therefore when women and children enter, we allow them to go into our area a few kilometers, where there are places for them to be checked by the woman Sri Lankan soldiers. After the checking, they are allowed to enter the school where we have the reception centre for the internally displaced people.
Sri Lankan Army sources said that Brigadier Shavendra Silva use to visit and mix with the Tamil civilians who arrive from the war zone, talk with them, and used to inquire about their families and children out of concern and sympathy for them. On Sunday the news bulletin transmitted in the TV showed Brigadier mixing with the civilians and talking with them.
Army sources said that LTTE should have calculated that Brigadier Shavendra Silva might come to meet the people also on Monday and must have sent the woman suicide bomber to finish him off.
When contacted Brigadier Shavendra Sillva told Asian Tribune that last night (Sunday Night) my visit to the reception centre was shown on the TV and the suicide bomber exploded herself at the same place, not even 2 feet away.
He added that "either they would have send her expecting that I will be visiting there and since that she did not see me, she must have exploded herself, may be just before her turn for checking."
